Mary, the Holy Mother of God – Solemnity
Gospel: Luke 2:16-21
On the threshold of a new year, the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, teaches us how to stand before the mystery of Christmas with depth and wisdom. While others hurry past the wonder of Bethlehem, Mary pauses, treasuring all these things and pondering them in her heart. She does not rush to explain or control the grace she receives; she safeguards it in silence, allowing God’s work to mature within her. As Mother of God, she becomes also Mother of grace, holding within her heart the saving events that will unfold for the world. At the beginning of 2026, Mary shows us the posture with which to enter the year ahead: not anxious planning, but attentive listening; not noise, but interior space. Christmas continues in her contemplative heart, inviting us to gather the graces we have received, to reflect on them with faith, and to entrust the unfolding of our lives to God who has already drawn near. Let’s reflect: Christmas is the grace we receive and guard in silence, allowing the mystery of God-with-us to be treasured, pondered, and gradually unfolded in our hearts, as Mother Mary teaches us.

Reading: 1 John 2:18-21
On this final day of the year, within the light-filled Octave of Christmas, Saint John reminds us of a foundational truth: to follow Christ is to stand firmly in the truth, knowing that no lie can ever come from it. The Child born at Christmas is the Truth made flesh, and remaining united to Him protects our hearts from confusion, fear, and deception. As one year closes, this truth invites us to pause with gratitude, for the grace that sustained us, for the unseen protection that guided us, and for the ways God remained faithful even when we were not. At the same time, Christmas calls us to forgiveness, because truth and love cannot coexist with resentment. Forgiving those who hurt us during the year is not weakness but a choice to remain in the light Christ has brought. Ending the year in truth, gratitude, and forgiveness becomes a quiet act of faith, preparing our hearts to begin anew under the gentle reign of the Word who has come to dwell among us. Let’s reflect: Christmas is choosing to live in the truth of Christ, free from falsehood, grateful for God’s faithfulness, and renewed through forgiveness that keeps our hearts in the light.

On this sixth day of the Christmas Octave, Saint John places before us a clear and demanding choice that flows directly from the mystery we celebrate. Christmas reveals the love of the Father made visible in His Son, and this love asks for our wholehearted response. The world with its passing attractions, desires, and illusions cannot offer the fullness that the Child of Bethlehem brings. To love the Father is not to reject creation, but to refuse being possessed by what does not last. Christmas teaches us to reorder our hearts, to let eternal love shape our priorities and free us from attachments that fade. As we gaze upon the Infant Jesus, small yet rich with divine life, we learn that true joy is found not in what we grasp, but in whom we belong to. Choosing the love of the Father is the quiet but decisive way to live Christmas every day. Let’s reflect: Christmas is the call to choose the enduring love of the Father revealed in Christ over the passing attractions of the world, allowing eternal love to shape our lives.

As the year draws to its close, gratitude becomes the most life-giving emotion we can choose to carry. Gratitude is the quiet acknowledgment that God has been present in every step of our journey, often unseen, always faithful. It moves us beyond self-centred satisfaction and teaches us to recognize how much of our success is woven from the kindness, patience, and presence of others. In moments of joy, gratitude creates space for the other, allowing shared happiness to become deeper and more beautiful. At the same time, gratitude keeps us humble, reminding us that every ending is also an invitation to grow, to improve, and to begin again with a wiser heart and a more generous spirit.

It continually recalibrates our expectations, softening rigid desires and teaching us to wait without bitterness, so that hope may mature rather than collapse. By reshaping what we expect from others, from life, and from ourselves, patience creates space for surprise, gratitude, and deeper understanding. In this gentle adjustment, disappointment loses its grip, and trust grows, quietly yet firmly, within the unfolding of time.
