Thursday 29 October

Thursday of week 30 in Ordinary Time, Gospel: Luke 13:31-35
In today’s Gospel, Jesus expresses His sorrow over Jerusalem: “How often have I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!” These words reveal the tenderness of God’s love and the tragedy of human resistance. God continually reaches out to us, offering His presence, guidance, protection, and grace. Yet when we resist recognizing the hand of God, we risk missing the very blessings He is offering us. The people of Jerusalem were waiting for God’s intervention, but many failed to recognize Him when He came among them in Jesus. Sometimes we too expect God to act according to our plans, preferences, and expectations. When His presence takes an unexpected form, we may overlook it or even resist it. God’s hand may be present in a difficult experience that teaches us humility, in a person who challenges our attitudes, in an unexpected change that opens new possibilities, or in a quiet invitation to forgive and begin again. The greatest obstacle to recognizing God’s action is not always His silence, but our unwillingness to see Him acting differently from what we expect. Jesus does not abandon His mission despite rejection and threats. His faithful love reminds us that God continues to invite us, even when we hesitate to respond. The message of Christ encourages us to cultivate an open and discerning heart, capable of recognizing God’s presence beyond our immediate understanding. Faith is not asking God always to follow our expectations, but learning to recognize and welcome His hand wherever He is leading us. Let’s reflect: Am I genuinely open to recognizing God’s hand in the people, events, and unexpected circumstances of my life, or do my fixed expectations and personal resistance prevent me from welcoming His presence and guidance?
