Saturday of the 5th week of Lent
Gospel: John 11:45-56In today’s Gospel, after the raising of Lazarus, the leaders begin to plot against Jesus. In their reasoning, Caiaphas declares, “It is better for one man to die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” What is spoken as a political calculation becomes, in God’s providence, a profound truth of salvation. Jesus will indeed give His life, not as a strategy, but as an act of love. The Gospel reveals the mystery of the Cross: what appears as rejection and sacrifice is in fact the path of redemption for all. During Lent, we are invited to contemplate this paradox, God transforms human intentions into instruments of grace. Jesus does not resist this destiny, but embraces it freely, offering Himself for the life of the world. As we draw closer to Holy Week, we are called to recognize that our salvation comes through this self-giving love, and to respond by entrusting ourselves to the One who gave everything for us. Let’s reflect: Lent is entrusting ourselves to the self-giving love of Christ, who offers His life for us so that we may live.
