Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles
Readings: Acts 12:1-11; Psalm 33(34):2-9; 2 Timothy 4:6-8,17-18; Matthew 16:13-19On the Solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, the Church gives thanks for the gift of the Petrine ministry and the apostolic mission entrusted by Christ for the life of His Church. In the Acts of the Apostles (12:1–11), Peter is miraculously freed from prison because the Lord remains faithful to the one whom He has chosen to strengthen His people. As the Psalm proclaims, “The angel of the Lord rescues those who revere him.” The preservation of Peter is not merely a personal blessing; it is a sign that Christ Himself protects the ministry He has established for the unity of His Church. In the Second Letter to Timothy (4:6–8, 17–18), Paul bears witness to the missionary dimension of this same apostolic foundation: “The Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the whole message might be proclaimed for all the pagans to hear.” The Petrine ministry and the apostolic mission exist so that the Gospel may reach every nation. Finally, in the Gospel (Matthew 16:13–19), Jesus reveals the foundation upon which the Church is built: Peter’s confession of faith in Christ, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The rock is not human strength but the faith revealed by the Father, entrusted to Peter for the service of unity. Every successor of Peter continues this mission: to confirm the brethren in faith, preserve the unity of the Church, and proclaim Christ to the ends of the earth. Today we give thanks that Christ continues to guide His Church through the Petrine ministry, so that the faith of the Apostles remains a living foundation for every generation and a visible source of communion for the whole People of God. Let’s reflect: Is my faith firmly rooted in Christ and lived in communion with the Church, allowing me to contribute to her unity and to proclaim the Gospel with the courage and fidelity of Saints Peter and Paul?
