“As he was saying this, a woman in the crowd called out to him, ‘Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you.’ But he said, ‘Yes, but blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.’” /Lk 11:27–28/
Mary, Blessed Virgin, generations upon generations, like this woman in the Gospel, praise you because you are the Mother of the Son of God, Jesus. This is what has made you most famous. Jesus, responding to the woman in the Gospel, confirms this, saying: yes, that is true. But at the same time, He immediately broadens the perspective by saying that blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it. As if He wanted to say that you, Mary, are even more blessed and are glorified by the fact that, being the Mother of the Son of God, you all the more willingly become His disciple. You listen even more attentively, keep His words in your heart (e.g., Luke 2:19), and fulfill them with pure love. This is a source of hope and guidance for us. And this path is possible for us too—by fulfilling Jesus’ words as you did, we can give birth to Him spiritually for the world.
