Friday of week 14 in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Matthew 10:16-23
In today’s Gospel, Jesus prepares His disciples for the challenges of their mission by giving them a remarkable instruction: “Be as cunning as serpents and yet as harmless as doves.” Christian wisdom is not naïve, nor is it manipulative. The disciple is called to combine prudence with innocence, intelligence with charity, and courage with gentleness. To proclaim the Gospel effectively, we must be creative and discerning, finding new ways to make the truth of Christ understandable and attractive in every culture and circumstance. Yet this creativity must always remain faithful to the logic of the Gospel, which never imposes itself by force or coercion. God’s Kingdom grows through the persuasive power of truth lived in love. Like Christ Himself, we are called to win hearts not by domination but by humble witness, patient dialogue, compassionate service, and the credibility of a transformed life. Even when we face rejection or persecution, Jesus assures us that the Holy Spirit will remain with us, giving us the words and the wisdom we need. The Gospel reminds us that authentic evangelization is both intelligent and loving: wise enough to discern the right path, and gentle enough to reflect the heart of Christ, who invites every person freely into the joy of His Kingdom. Let’s reflect: Do I proclaim the Gospel with both the wisdom to discern the right way and the gentleness of Christ, seeking to win hearts through love rather than force?
