Saturday memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Gospel: Matthew 12:14-21
In today’s Gospel, the Pharisees begin plotting against Jesus, seeking to destroy Him. Instead of confronting them with force, Jesus quietly withdraws. Yet the crowds follow Him, and “He cured them all.” This simple sentence reveals the extraordinary heart of Christ. Even while facing rejection and hostility, He never allows bitterness or self-protection to distract Him from His mission of mercy. He continues to welcome everyone who comes to Him and withholds His healing from no one. Jesus fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy of the Servant who does not break the bruised reed or quench the smoldering wick. His strength is expressed through gentleness, and His victory comes through compassionate love. On this memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we see the same quiet fidelity in her life. She never sought recognition or defended herself against misunderstanding but remained close to God and to those in need. The Gospel invites us to imitate this way of loving. When we experience opposition, misunderstanding, or hurt, our first instinct is often to withdraw from others. Jesus teaches a different path: we may step away from conflict, but never from charity. A heart united to Christ never stops doing good. Like Him, we are called to continue bringing healing, hope, and mercy to everyone who comes our way, allowing no rejection to diminish our love. Let’s reflect: When I experience rejection or misunderstanding, do I allow it to diminish my love for others, or do I continue, like Christ, to bring healing, mercy, and hope to everyone I meet?
