Thursday of the 5th week of Lent
Gospel: John 8:51-59
In today’s Gospel, Jesus reveals a profound truth about His identity and His relationship with Abraham. He declares that whoever keeps His word will never see death, pointing to a life that transcends human limits. When the people question Him, referring to Abraham as their father, Jesus leads them beyond history into eternity: “Before Abraham was, I am.” In this moment, Jesus reveals Himself not only as a descendant in time, but as the eternal Son, present even before Abraham. The faith of Abraham, who trusted in God’s promise, finds its fulfilment in Christ. During Lent, we are invited to move from a faith rooted only in tradition to a living relationship with Jesus, recognizing Him as the source of life and the fulfilment of every promise. To believe in Him is to enter into a relationship that goes beyond the past and opens us to eternal life in the present. Let’s reflect: Lent is moving from inherited faith to a living relationship with Jesus, the eternal “I Am,” who fulfils God’s promises and gives us life.
