Thursday of week 8 in Ordinary Time Gospel: Mark 10:46-52In today’s Gospel, the healing of Bartimaeus reveals that responding to Jesus requires courage, detachment, and concrete action. When the people say to him, “Courage, get up; he is calling you,” Bartimaeus does not remain sitting in fear or hesitation. “Throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and went to Jesus.” The cloak was probably his security, his possession, his familiar protection as a blind beggar, yet he leaves it behind immediately because the call of Christ becomes more important than comfort or fear. Spiritually, this cloak can also represent our sins, attachments, excuses, and spiritual complacency that keep us from fully encountering Jesus. The Gospel teaches that faith is not passive waiting but courageous movement toward Christ. Bartimaeus rises, leaves behind what holds him back, and rushes toward Jesus with trust and urgency. This is the true response to the call of the Lord: to stand up from spiritual paralysis, to let go of what enslaves us, and to move concretely toward Christ. The one who truly hears the voice of Jesus cannot remain seated in comfort forever; discipleship begins when courage overcomes fear and when faith becomes action. Let’s reflect: Do I truly have the courage to rise from my comforts, throw off the cloak of my sins and attachments, and move concretely toward Jesus when He calls me?
