Friday of week 11 in Ordinary Time
Saint Romuald, Abbot
Gospel: Matthew 6:19-23In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches that the quality of our lives depends greatly on the way we see: “The lamp of the body is the eye.” Our vision shapes our desires, our choices, and ultimately the direction of our hearts. If our eyes are fixed only on earthly treasures, possessions, status, or fears, our inner life gradually becomes darkened. But when we learn to see through the light of the love of God, everything changes. We begin to recognize our true worth as beloved children of the Father, to see others as brothers and sisters, and to discover God’s presence even in ordinary moments and difficult situations. The love of God purifies our vision and frees us from looking at life through the lenses of selfishness, comparison, resentment, or anxiety. Jesus invites us to store up treasures in heaven because what we value shapes the way we see, and the way we see shapes the way we live. A heart illuminated by God’s love perceives life differently: it sees opportunities to serve rather than to possess, reasons for gratitude rather than complaint, and signs of hope rather than despair. The Gospel reminds us that the deepest transformation begins not by changing our circumstances, but by allowing God’s love to enlighten our eyes and renew our vision. Let’s reflect: Am I looking at my life, other people, and my circumstances through the light of God’s love, or are my vision and choices being shaped by fear, resentment, comparison, and the pursuit of earthly treasures?
