Gospel: Matthew 12:38-42In today's Gospel, the scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign, as though His words, miracles, and very presence were still not enough. Jesus points them instead to the sign of Jonah and declares that "something greater than Jonah is here" and "something greater than Solomon is here." The tragedy of those who questioned Him was not the absence of evidence but their failure to recognize who was standing before them. The greatest gift God can offer humanity is not another miracle but His own presence in Jesus Christ. The same challenge remains for us today. We often look for extraordinary signs to reassure us that God is near, while overlooking the countless ways He is already present—in His Word, in the Eucharist, in the Church, in the people He places on our path, and in the quiet moments of daily life. Faith matures not by constantly seeking new signs but by awakening to the greatness of the Presence that already surrounds and fills our lives. When we truly recognize Christ's presence, ordinary moments become encounters with grace, trials become opportunities for trust, and our lives acquire a deeper meaning. The memorial of Saint Apollinaris reminds us that the martyrs were able to endure suffering because they valued Christ's presence more than their own security. The greatest miracle is not that God occasionally visits us, but that He has chosen to remain with us. To recognize His presence is the beginning of wisdom, the source of hope, and the foundation of a life transformed by faith. Let’s reflect: Do I spend my life looking for extraordinary signs from God, or do I recognize and treasure the extraordinary gift of His presence already at work in my daily life?
