Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, Gospel: John 2:13-22
In today’s Gospel, Jesus cleanses the Temple and declares: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” Saint John explains that Jesus was speaking about the temple of His Body. These words reveal a profound truth: the Church is not simply a building where we gather, but the living Body of Christ, of which we are members. Today, as we celebrate the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome and the mother church of all churches, we are reminded that the beauty and sacredness of our churches find their deepest meaning in the living community of believers united with Christ. Through Baptism, we become members of His Body, and through the Eucharist, our communion with Him and with one another is continually strengthened. We do not merely belong to a church; we belong to Christ and, through Him, to one another. This belonging gives us both dignity and responsibility. Every member is precious, and every member contributes to the life and mission of the whole Body. When one member suffers, the entire community is called to care; when one rejoices, all share in that joy. Jesus’ cleansing of the Temple also reminds us that the Church must continually be purified of everything that obscures its true purpose: revealing God’s presence and love. The holiness of the Church must be visible not only in its sacred buildings, but especially in the love, unity, and faithfulness of its members. The message of Christ invites us to become living stones of His Church, building communion rather than division, offering service rather than seeking importance, and making His presence visible wherever we live. A church building becomes a sign of God’s dwelling among us; a loving Christian community makes that dwelling a living experience. Let’s reflect: Do I live with the awareness that I am a living member of the Body of Christ, contributing through my faith, love, service, and communion to making His presence visible in the Church and in the world?
