They say that humility does not really mean thinking badly of oneself, but rather thinking less of oneself. You, Mary, are the most humble, because you do not think of yourself at all and you do not worry about yourself at all. For you, giving glory to God is self-evident when you sing from the depths of your joyful heart: “The Almighty has done great things for me.” For you, it is natural to give yourself in service when you simply say: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.” And you are consistent. You live entirely in God and for God, so you need not worry about yourself, because you constantly remember and trust that “your fate is in God’s hands.” Your humility has nothing to do with self-abasement. It is a quiet joy in the awareness of being small, because you know God and you know that it is precisely the small and the meek who are especially loved by Him. Often God also chooses them so that He may act in them and through them with complete freedom, according to His boundless love. Mary, humble Mother, remind us every day that we do not need to think so much of ourselves, because we are in God’s hands, desired and shaped by Him. This is our greatest value.
