Gospel – Luke 11:27-28
How can somebody be happier than the womb that bore Jesus? But it is Jesus who is saying, “Still happier those who hear the word of God and keep it”. So, there is no way to doubt it. The woman who was speaking to Jesus, was mentioning to the happiness of carrying Jesus and serving Jesus intimately. But what Jesus refers is a greater happiness, which comes from identification of oneself with Him. When you hear the word of God and keep it, the Word incarnates in you, and you become united with Him. “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (Jn 14:23). Mother Mary had this happiness too par excellence. So, this happiness which Jesus proposes is more than the happiness we receive from serving Him. We can serve Jesus without keeping the word of God. The challenge which the words of Jesus put is this: Are we content enough with the happiness we receive from serving Him or are we going for greater happiness which comes from the listening the word of God and keeping it?
