The Baptism of the Lord
Readings: Isaiah 42:1-4,6-7; Acts 10:34-38; Matthew 3:13-17
The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord reveals the deepest truth about who Jesus is and how He acts in the world. As Jesus steps into the waters of the Jordan, heaven opens, the Spirit descends, and the Father’s voice names Him as the Beloved Son, an identity grounded not in power or privilege, but in communion with God and total availability to His will. Endowed with the Holy Spirit, Jesus is sent to bring true justice to the nations, a justice that heals rather than condemns, restores rather than dominates. As the Acts of the Apostles remind us, because God was with Him, Jesus went about doing good and freeing those oppressed by evil. His baptism is not about repentance for sin, but about solidarity with humanity and the inauguration of a mission shaped by the Spirit. This feast invites us to recognize that the same Spirit who rested upon Jesus calls us to live our own baptism with courage, allowing God’s voice to define us, God’s Spirit to guide us, and God’s justice to take flesh through our lives.
