5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings: Isaiah 58:7-10; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Matthew 5:13-16
On this Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Word of God reveals who we truly are as disciples of Christ and how this identity must take flesh in our lives. Jesus declares that we are salt of the earth and light of the world, not by our own merit, but because we belong to Him and share in His mission. The first reading from Isaiah shows that we become light not through words alone, but through concrete acts of mercy: sharing bread with the hungry, welcoming the poor, clothing the naked, and refusing to turn away from those closest to us. Light shines where love is lived. Saint Paul, in turn, reminds us that we become salt not by human wisdom or impressive speech, but by knowing one thing above all: Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. The salt that gives flavor to the world is a faith rooted in the Cross, humble, authentic, and free of self-glory. When our faith is grounded in Christ crucified and expressed through works of compassion, our lives truly illuminate the world and preserve it with the quiet strength of the Gospel. Let’s reflect: Do my daily choices reveal me as salt and light, rooted in Christ crucified and made visible through concrete acts of love toward those in need?
