Friday of week 2 in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mark 3:13-19
In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls those he wants and invites them first to be with him before sending them out, revealing the true heart of discipleship. Being a disciple is not primarily about activity, roles, or success, but about relationship, remaining close to Jesus, learning his heart, his way of seeing, and his compassion. From this intimacy flows mission: only those who stay with Him can truly be sent by Him. The two movements, being with Jesus and being sent, are not separate stages but one single dynamic of following. If mission is detached from communion, it becomes activism; if communion lacks mission, it becomes self-enclosed spirituality. Jesus unites both: He forms disciples by sharing His life with them and then entrusts them with His own authority to proclaim and to heal. Today’s reflection reminds us that authentic Christian life is a continual rhythm of closeness and outreach, silence and proclamation, prayer and service. To follow Jesus is to allow our daily life to become this one unified act: remaining in Him so that He may reach others through us. Let’s reflect: Do I truly remain with Jesus in a living relationship so that my actions and mission flow from Him, or do I try to serve without first abiding in His presence?
