Friday of the 1st week of Lent
Saint Gregory of Narek, Abbot and Doctor of the Church
Gospel: Matthew 5:20-26In today’s Gospel, Jesus redefines the authenticity of our relationship with God. Worship cannot be separated from reconciliation; prayer cannot bypass wounded relationships. If, while bringing our offering to the altar, we remember that a brother or sister has something against us, we are called to pause, even before God, and seek reconciliation first. This teaching is radical: communion with God is inseparable from communion with others. On the memorial of Saint Gregory of Narek, whose profound prayers flowed from a heart purified by repentance, we are reminded that true holiness is relational. Lent urges us to examine not only our devotions, but also our broken bonds. The altar awaits us, but God prefers a reconciled heart to a perfect ritual. When we choose humility and take the first step toward peace, our offering becomes sincere, and our relationship with God regains its integrity. Let’s reflect: Lent is choosing reconciliation with others as the true measure of our communion with God.
